North Korea removes assembly vice chairman and revises two laws
The report did not name the officials removed or explain why, and it did not disclose the details of the law changes.
North Korea's parliament recalled one of its two vice chairmen and a committee member on Thursday, South Korea's national news agency Yonhap reported.
The Standing Committee of the 15th Supreme People's Assembly held its second plenary session that day, chaired by Vice Chairman Kim Hyong-sik, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.
The report did not name the officials who were recalled or give a reason for the decision.
Because Kim presided over the session, the other vice chairman, Ri Son-gwon, may be the one removed, although the report did not confirm this.
Ri has held some of the country's most senior posts on inter-Korean and foreign affairs, including chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country.
He also served as foreign minister from 2020 to 2022 and headed the United Front Department, which handles relations with South Korea.
The committee adopted decrees revising the construction law and the precious metal management law, but the report gave no details of the changes.
The construction law revision may be linked to leader Kim Jong-un's regional development policy, launched in 2024.
That policy calls for building modern factories, hospitals and other service facilities in 20 cities and counties each year over a 10-year period, aimed at narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas.
Kim has stressed the need to strengthen and refine the construction law to transform local economies, the report said.
