Ukraine security guarantees discussed at NATO headquarters in Brussels

The talks followed a first round hosted by the European Commission on Nov. 4 that focused on Ukraine's post-conflict reconstruction.

Multilateral technical consultations involving Ukraine, the United States and several European partners took place at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Friday, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.

Participants included the European Commission, the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Ukraine, the report said.

The Rapporteur news website, which TASS cited, gave no further details beyond saying the talks focused on security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe's future security architecture.

The same report said NATO also hosted an extraordinary meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council at ambassadorial level.

The meeting marked the second stage of consultations in Brussels, the report said, after a first round hosted by the European Commission on Nov. 4 that focused on Ukraine's post-conflict reconstruction.

Security guarantees for Ukraine have been a central issue in Western discussions about ending the war with Russia, with European governments and Washington seeking arrangements that would deter future attacks on Ukraine.

NATO is a military alliance headquartered in Brussels, and Ukraine is not a member of the alliance, although it has a dedicated council with the bloc that allows regular consultations.

The European Commission is the executive arm of the European Union, and its role in the talks reflects the bloc's part in planning Ukraine's recovery and long-term security.
