Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has directed relevant authorities to implement robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure a smooth sugar supply chain and prevent market distortion during the export process, the state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.

The directive was issued during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Export of Surplus Sugar, which aimed to finalize policy guidelines for sugar exports in Islamabad.

Dar emphasized that while facilitating exports is crucial to support local farmers, strengthen the sugar industry, and boost foreign exchange reserves, maintaining stable prices in the domestic market remains a top priority.

He also highlighted the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to protect domestic consumers.

The committee conducted a comprehensive review of the final sugar stock position until the upcoming crushing season to accurately gauge overall surplus quantities and ensure availability of ample reserves for local consumption.

Background

Pakistan's sugar industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy, with sugarcane being one of the main crops grown in the country.

The industry has faced challenges in recent years, including fluctuations in global prices and domestic demand, which have impacted the country's sugar production and exports.

Impact on Consumers

The government's move to monitor sugar exports aims to ensure that domestic consumers have access to affordable sugar and that prices remain stable in the market.
