Beth Mooney to Lead Perth Scorchers in WBBL|12

Beth Mooney named captain of Perth Scorchers for WBBL|12, replacing Sophie Devine, Cricket Australia reported.

Sports - Cricket Australia

Perth Scorchers have announced Beth Mooney as their new captain for WBBL|12, succeeding Sophie Devine who ended her six-year tenure, Cricket Australia said in a statement.

Mooney, who has played 80 games for the Scorchers since 2020, expressed her honour and excitement to lead the team, saying it's an opportunity to build on the strong culture they've developed.

Devine led the Scorchers to their only women's Big Bash title in WBBL|07 and played 77 games with the team, but has stepped down from the captaincy role.

Head coach Becky Grundy praised Devine for her exceptional leadership and contribution to the team's culture, and welcomed Mooney as an exceptional leader who will drive the team's success.

Mooney, the league's all-time leading run-scorer with 5,600 runs, has experience leading T20 teams, including Gujarat Giants and Manchester Super Giants.

The Scorchers begin their WBBL season against Melbourne Renegades at the WACA Ground on Saturday, with Pakistan captain Fatima Sana set to make her Big Bash debut.

Background

The Perth Scorchers are one of the teams competing in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), Australia's premier women's T20 cricket competition.

What It Means

The change in leadership may impact the team's dynamics, but with Mooney's experience and Devine's continued involvement, the Scorchers are likely to remain competitive.
