Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday ordered authorities to meet deadlines for the Jinnah Medical Complex in Islamabad, the state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.

Sharif chaired a meeting to review progress on the Jinnah Medical and Research Centre, where he said he was satisfied with the pace of construction.

He said the hospital would provide advanced healthcare to patients from across the country, particularly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

He instructed that all appointments at the medical complex be made transparently and strictly on merit.

Sharif also called for a private-sector organization to run the hospital and maintain internationally recognized healthcare standards.

He directed that modern diagnostic facilities be made available to low and middle-income groups, with PET scans and other advanced services made part of the project.

The meeting was told that 59 percent of the overall work on the centre has been completed.

The basic infrastructure of the main hospital and parking plaza is ready, and the 403-bed facility is targeted to become operational by March 23, 2027.

Work on installing and maintaining medical equipment, the hospital's digital management system and other administrative arrangements is progressing, the meeting was told.

The national competitive bidding process for Phase II of the centre in H-11 has started under a revised design, and construction is expected to begin soon.

Procurement of advanced diagnostic equipment and scanners for the project is also underway, the meeting was informed.

The centre is being built in the federal capital, where the government is developing it as a major public healthcare facility.
