Sri Lanka pulled off the second-highest successful chase in one-day international history, hauling down a target of 430 against England in Rawalpindi, according to the match report.

The home team was reduced to 24 for two but Pavan Rathnayake's 130, Avishka Fernando's 97, and Dasun Shanaka's 97 turned the game around. Rathnayake and Fernando were the top scorers, while Shanaka's brutal batting included eight sixes.

England's Harry Brook scored a record 202, the fastest double hundred in ODI history, but his efforts were in vain. England captain Joe Root also reached 8,000 ODI runs. Sri Lanka needed eight runs off the final over, with Josh Tongue bowling the last over.

He dismissed Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with consecutive deliveries, but Janith Liyanage hit a six to win the match with one ball to spare, theguardian.com said.

England's total of 429 for four was their fourth-highest ODI score and highest outside England against a Test-playing nation.

The 859 runs scored in total was the second-highest ODI aggregate and the highest in a game involving England. Brook's 144 runs in boundaries surpassed Jos Buttler's England record of 124. The two teams combined for 93 fours and 552 runs in boundaries, both records for a one-day international match.

Harry Brook's 202 was England's highest ever one-day international score, beating Ben Stokes' 182 against New Zealand in 2023.

It was also the highest ever score and first double century by a batter in an ODI defeat. Sri Lanka's effort slots in as the second-highest successful chase in men's one-day international history.
