Sudan army says it downed Chinese-made drone in West Kordofan

The army did not say who operated the drone or what mission it was flying, and fighting continues across Kordofan.

Sudan's army claimed on Monday it shot down an FH-95 drone over West Kordofan state, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

In a short announcement, the army said it brought down a "hostile" drone south of Wad Banda on Monday evening.

The military did not say who operated the aircraft or what mission it was flying.

The Chinese-made FH-95 is built for reconnaissance, surveillance and electronic warfare, and it can stay airborne for more than 12 hours.

Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is continuing across North, West and South Kordofan, the three states that make up the Kordofan region.

The army and the RSF have fought since April 2023, with the dispute centred on whether the paramilitary group should be integrated into the military.

UN and international estimates put the death toll from the conflict in the tens of thousands, with around 13 million people displaced.

The RSF grew out of the Janjaweed militias that were used in Darfur in the early 2000s, and it later became a major armed force in the country.

Drones have become a common feature of the conflict, with both sides relying on aircraft for surveillance and strikes.

The war has also pushed millions of people across Sudan's borders, adding to a large regional refugee crisis.
