A drone strike targeted a power station in River Nile state, northern Sudan, early on Sunday, setting off a fire and triggering loud explosions, according to eyewitnesses, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported on Sunday.

The Abu Hamad power station, located about 538 kilometers north of the capital Khartoum, was hit in the attack.

Witnesses described hearing loud explosions around the facility as flames engulfed parts of the station, with videos shared on social media showing a large fire at the power station.

This latest strike brings the total number of power stations targeted by drone attacks across six Sudanese states to 12 since Monday.

The affected states include Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, Gedaref, River Nile, and Red Sea.

The attacks on power infrastructure come amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been raging since April 2023.

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced around 13 million people, exacerbating a humanitarian and hunger crisis.

The latest attack followed another drone strike on Saturday targeting the Hayya power station in Red Sea state, a facility still under construction.

There was no immediate comment from Sudanese authorities on the attack or the extent of casualties and damage.
