Tesla to wind down Cybertruck output in Texas around mid-2027

The Texas factory space will make room for more Cybercab production, as Cybertruck sales have fallen well short of earlier targets.

Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory around mid-2027, Elon Musk said on Friday in a post on X.

Musk wrote that the change would free up space “to make room for increased Cybercab production,” and the post gave no further explanation.

Electrek reported the news early on Friday, noting that Tesla originally designed the Cybertruck production line to build about 250,000 vehicles a year.

The same report estimated 7,000 to 8,000 Cybertruck deliveries in the third quarter of 2026, a pace of roughly 28,000 to 32,000 vehicles annually.

Forbes cited Cox Automotive estimates showing U.S. Cybertruck sales fell from 38,965 vehicles in 2024 to 20,237 in 2025, a decline of about 48 percent.

Those estimates put U.S. sales at about 11,586 Cybertrucks in the first nine months of 2026, down 28 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Musk unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019 as a durable, revolutionary pickup, but a demonstration of its armored glass ended with the windows cracking onstage.

The truck began reaching customers in late 2023, years after its unveiling, at prices well above the figures Musk had advertised.

Its angular design drew wide attention, but it did not generate the mass-market demand Tesla had expected.
