Two killed in machete attack on provincial offices in DR Congo
Police said a security guard shot the attacker dead after he tried to disarm another guard, and four other security personnel were hurt.
Two people were killed when an assailant attacked provincial offices in Lubumbashi, southern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Friday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.
Police and provincial authorities said the attack took place in the morning at the Haut-Katanga provincial headquarters in Lubumbashi, the provincial capital.
Police said an unidentified assailant armed with two machetes forced his way through the entrance at about 10 a.m. local time and tried to disarm a security guard on duty.
The situation escalated quickly when another security guard posted nearby opened fire, killing the assailant, police said.
The police officer who was first attacked also died, leaving two people dead in total.
Local media reported that four other security personnel were seriously injured and taken to a nearby health facility.
Haut-Katanga provincial Interior and Security Minister Jean-Jacques Kashiba said an extraordinary meeting of the provincial security council was expected to be held to discuss the matter.
Kashiba said investigators were working to establish the attacker's identity and the exact circumstances of the incident.
Lubumbashi is the main city of Haut-Katanga, a mining region rich in copper and cobalt that borders Zambia, while eastern Congo has faced years of armed violence involving rebel groups, though the source does not link this attack to any group.
