Zelenskyy warns Trump's 'big agreement' on Ukraine could be dangerous

He said Russia has not yet shown any sign it is ready to act, and he rejected a Yalta-style deal for Europe.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Friday that a "big agreement" described this week by US President Donald Trump could be dangerous for Ukraine and Europe, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

On Thursday, Trump confirmed to reporters in the Oval Office that he had met Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who had attended a White House event hosted by first lady Melania Trump that day.

Asked what they had discussed, Trump said he could not say, but predicted "a big, beautiful agreement" that might involve more than Ukraine and possibly all of Europe.

In an interview with CNN, an excerpt of which aired Friday, Zelenskyy said there were many proposals and talks, some of which he called useful and very important, and he backed a ceasefire followed by de-escalation.

He said Russia had not yet shown any demonstration or signal that it was ready to act, adding, "That's why it's dangerous."

Zelenskyy argued that when Russia avoids talks on a settlement, it pushes dialogue toward a new security architecture in Europe, which he said was dangerous for everyone on the continent and more so for the EU than for Ukraine.

"We don't want to have Yalta, Yalta 2," he said, referring to the 1945 conference at which Allied powers discussed the postwar order in Europe.

The Ukrainian president also said sovereignty and territorial integrity are essential for any independent country, and that Ukraine's neighbors must respect them for it to become a free, democratic country.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the war has continued despite several diplomatic efforts to end it.
