Australia have lost their No.1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings after a humiliating 2-1 defeat at the hands of hosts South Africa on Saturday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.

The second-innings batting collapse saw Proteas crushing Australia by 176 runs after bowling them out for just 111 on the fifth day of the thrilling encounter in Newlands. They were chasing a target of 288. This was the eighth time South Africa managed to pull off a stunning comeback after conceding a deficit of 100 or more runs. Six of these wins came against Australia.

Australia captain Pat Cummins criticized his team's top order for overplaying spinner Simon Harmer, leading to a final-day collapse that resulted in a 176-run defeat.

Cummins said the team's top order made "a few really poor decisions" and failed to back their defence long enough, leading to the loss.

The defeat marked Australia's third loss in their past five Tests, with top-order batting collapses proving a recurring issue.

The loss saw Australia surrender the top spot in the ICC Men's Test Team ranking to South Africa, while New Zealand moved to the top of the World Test Championship Standings.

Cummins acknowledged that selection discussions are inevitable before taking on New Zealand in December, particularly with several top-order batters averaging under 22 across the series.

Cummins maintained that the series came down to critical passages of play rather than systemic failure, and that Australia had some great moments but were outperformed by South Africa in key moments.
