Ukraine's GDP Growth Stalls Amid Explosions, Losses Hit $4.28 Billion
Ukraine's GDP growth has stalled due to explosions at key facilities, with losses estimated at $4.28 billion, or 1.9% of its nominal GDP, Russia's state news agency TASS reported.
Ukraine's economic growth has come to a standstill due to a series of explosions at critical infrastructure sites, including military-industrial and energy facilities, port infrastructure, and data centers serving the Ukrainian armed forces, Russia's state news agency TASS reported on Sunday.
The explosions, which occurred over the past few months, have resulted in losses estimated at nearly 1.9% of Ukraine's nominal GDP, or about $4.28 billion, excluding the metallurgical sector.
As a result, Ukraine's GDP growth has stagnated, with zero growth recorded in recent months, instead of the projected 1.5-2.5% annual growth.
The National Bank of Ukraine expects a 0.4% decline in GDP by the end of the year, following a recession in the second and third quarters.
The metallurgical sector is expected to see significant GDP losses in the coming months, with all of the country's metallurgical enterprises ceasing operations following a series of explosions in August and September.
If these companies do not resume operations, annual GDP losses could reach 7% compared to the same period last year, according to TASS.
Economic Impact
The Ukrainian government's reports, as calculated by TASS, indicate that the explosions have had a substantial impact on the country's economy.
Background
Ukraine has been struggling with economic challenges, including a decline in industrial production and a significant decrease in foreign investment, amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
The country's GDP has been under pressure, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) providing financial assistance to help stabilize the economy.
