Hubert Aiwanger, leader of Germany's Free Voters party and Bavaria's deputy premier and economy minister, was found dead in a Berlin hotel on Wednesday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Police sources indicated that health problems were the likely cause and that no signs of foul play had been found.

The 55-year-old's body was discovered at the Neuer Fritz hotel in the Berlin-Mitte district after he failed to attend the opening of his party's new office in the capital because he was unwell, Bild newspaper reported.

Sources in the Bavarian state government and Berlin police confirmed the death to Bild.

Tagesspiegel, citing police circles, reported that there were no indications of outside involvement and that health reasons appeared to be behind the death.

Aiwanger led the Free Voters in Bavaria from 2006 and the federal party from 2010, becoming one of the most visible regional figures in the party's history.

He entered the Bavarian state parliament in 2008 and, after the 2018 election, became economy minister and deputy premier in a government led by Markus Soeder of the Christian Social Union.

Germany has 16 states, and each has its own state government, with Bavaria's premier and deputy premier leading the government in the southern state.
