Yemen's Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba handed a written message from President Rashad al-Alimi to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Thursday, the news agency of Yemen's internationally recognised government Saba (Government) reported.

The talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul covered bilateral relations, wider regional developments and the latest situation in Yemen, including Houthi attacks and threats to shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Al-Zouba urged Germany to increase its backing for the government, particularly by strengthening the Yemeni Coast Guard and by helping with security and humanitarian problems, she said.

She also accused the Houthis of attacks on civilians and cited their alleged ties to Iranian and Hezbollah experts.

Wadephul said Germany supports Yemen's internationally recognised government and United Nations humanitarian efforts.

He voiced concern over the worsening humanitarian situation and called for an immediate end to Houthi attacks against the Yemeni and Saudi people.

The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen including the capital Sanaa, have attacked commercial shipping in the Red Sea since late 2023, disrupting major trade routes.

The Presidential Leadership Council, which Alimi chairs, was formed in 2022 to lead the government's effort to reunify and govern the country, and it is based in the southern port city of Aden.
