India beat New Zealand by five wickets in Auckland opener
Virat Kohli made 74 and took a diving catch as India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
India beat New Zealand by five wickets in the first one-day international in Auckland on Wednesday, Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Rain interrupted India's reply several times, so they chased a revised target of 143 under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method at Eden Park.
Virat Kohli made 74 from 51 balls, his 80th half-century in one-day internationals, before he was caught at deep square leg off Jacob Duffy.
New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs after losing the toss to India captain Shubman Gill.
Only five days earlier, the side had made 7-259 in the fourth T20 match.
Pace bowlers Arshdeep Singh, who took 4-70, and Gurnoor Brar, who took 3-44, claimed seven wickets between them.
New Zealand's top order struggled against short-pitched bowling throughout the innings.
Anshul Kamboj took two wickets and conceded 22 runs from his 10 overs in only his second ODI, earning the player of the match award.
Kohli also took a one-handed diving catch above the grass to dismiss Nathan Smith for one, and Kamboj's first wicket came from that catch.
Tim Seifert opened the batting in place of the concussed Devon Conway and top-scored for New Zealand with 38 in his first ODI in more than 18 months.
"I think we bowled very good," Gill said after the match.
"Overall a very good team performance."
India lead the five-match series 1-0.
The series moves to Wellington on Saturday.
