India's Mohammed Shami retires from Test cricket after 64 matches
The fast bowler finished with 229 wickets from 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls, and last played in the format in 2023.
Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday in an Instagram post, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
The 36-year-old leaves the longest format with 229 wickets from 64 Tests, including six five-wicket hauls, the ICC said.
Known for generating seam movement and swing with both the new and old ball, Shami made his Test debut against West Indies in 2013.
He was especially valuable overseas, taking 145 wickets in 41 Tests away from home at an average of 30.33.
In South Africa, he took 5/28 in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test during India's 2018 tour, helping secure a consolation victory.
On the next tour, he claimed eight wickets in the first Test at Centurion, which India won.
His final Test appearance came in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia.
Injuries interrupted different phases of his career, but the ICC said his contributions with the ball remained an important part of India's success.
Test cricket is the longest form of the game, played over up to five days with two innings per side.
Shami has also played limited-overs cricket for India, but the ICC release does not cover that part of his career.
