A Saudi-led coalition said on Sunday it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile and a drone aimed at southern Saudi Arabia, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki announced the interceptions in two separate statements on the social media platform X, first reporting that air defenses had destroyed a ballistic missile and then that a drone had also been shot down.

Both projectiles were launched by the Houthis toward the kingdom's southern region, the statements said.

These were the coalition's first interception announcements on Sunday, and neither statement specified the intended targets or reported any casualties or damage.

Earlier on Sunday, Saudi authorities issued emergency warnings for Abha city and Khamis Mushait governorate in southwestern Saudi Arabia, then announced that the danger had passed in both areas.

The interception announcements came hours after the coalition said it had carried out a military operation to disrupt resources the Houthis use to support their war effort, particularly ballistic missiles and drones.

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone attacks by the Houthis in recent weeks.

The Houthis, an armed group that controls much of northern Yemen, have been fighting Yemen's internationally recognized government, which Saudi Arabia has backed through a coalition military campaign since 2015.
