Spain sends Ukraine new military aid worth $489 million

Zelenskyy said the package followed talks with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid about Ukraine's urgent defense priorities.

Spain has pledged a new military aid package worth €437 million ($489 million) to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

Zelenskyy said in a post on the social media platform X that he met Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid to discuss the defense priorities that are most urgent for Ukraine.

He said Spain has supported Kyiv steadily over the course of the conflict with Moscow.

Zelenskyy said he briefed Sanchez on Russian strikes against key parts of Ukraine's infrastructure, including power facilities, supply networks and rail lines.

He said Russia has damaged more of Ukraine's locomotives this year than in all earlier years of the war combined.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine's electricity grid and water supply are under constant attack, and that conditions are especially hard in Kyiv.

He added that humanitarian support, at every stage, remains highly important to Ukraine.

Sanchez wrote on X after the meeting that Spain will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people, arguing that defending their freedom also means defending international law, national sovereignty and the European project.

Spain has been one of Ukraine's European partners since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, and several European governments have sent military and humanitarian support to Kyiv through bilateral packages and joint programs.

The statement did not give details of what the new package contains or when its deliveries will begin.
