Activists hoist Palestinian flag in place of German flag at parliament
Three activists were detained in Berlin, and police opened an investigation into suspected insult of the state and its symbols.
Activists replaced Germany's national flag with a Palestinian flag on a pole outside parliament in Berlin on Sunday, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.
The group Peacefully Against Genocide said the protest was meant to show solidarity with Palestinians and to criticize German politicians for failing to act against what it called grave human rights violations and genocide.
A group member named Aaron said in a press release that governments which stay silent on, permit or back what he called genocide in Palestine do not act in the name of their people.
"No matter where in the world a genocide is committed, it affects us all," he said.
He said the group wanted to reach ordinary Germans and asked what the phrase 'never again' means if such atrocities are allowed to happen again.
He also asked what international law is worth if governments do not follow it, and what human rights are worth if they do not apply to everyone.
"We must not shirk our responsibility to stop crimes against humanity," he added.
Berlin police said three activists were arrested at the scene and an investigation was launched on suspicion of insulting the state and state symbols.
The group announced further protests in the coming days against the government's policy and its continued arms supplies to Israel.
It also called on arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to halt all deliveries to Israel and shut down its Berlin facility.
Arms exports to Israel have been a recurring source of dispute in Germany since the war in Gaza began in 2023.
