Photojournalist killed covering fighting in Yemen's Marib
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate demanded an investigation and urged protection for journalists working in armed conflicts.
Freelance photojournalist Abdulrahman al-Houri was killed while filming a front line in Yemen's Marib province, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday.
Al-Houri was filming in southern Marib on Friday, when he was covering clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis, and he supplied footage and photographs to media outlets and reporters working in the province.
The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate mourned the young journalist and called for an investigation into how he died, saying those responsible must be held to account.
The union also called for better protection for journalists and media workers operating in areas of armed conflict.
In a separate statement, the Yemeni army said two commanders were killed while fighting the Houthis in Marib, but it did not say when they died or give details of how they were killed.
Government forces hold Marib city and the province's oil and gas fields, while the Houthis control several rural districts.
Yemen has been in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and parts of the country.
A Saudi-led coalition joined the fighting in 2015 to back Yemen's internationally recognized government, a move that led to years of war and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The latest escalation between government forces and the Houthis began in July, when a 2022 ceasefire broke down.
