China urges US to correct 'wrongdoings' after Cuba-linked sanctions

The Commerce Ministry said China reserves the right to take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

China urged the US on Saturday to correct its "wrongdoings" swiftly after Washington sanctioned two Chinese firms over Cuba, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu Agency reported.

The US Department of State announced the measures on Thursday, designating eight entities and two individuals and identifying five vessels as blocked property.

Washington said the steps were meant to advance its effort to end the Cuban regime's harmful activities in Cuba and across the region.

Among the sanctioned companies were China National Electronic Import and Export Company (CEIEC) and Beijing H&C Technologies Co. Ltd., which the US accused of supplying the Cuban armed forces with components and equipment.

The Commerce Ministry said China firmly opposes unilateral sanctions on Chinese enterprises, which it said violate international law and the basic norms of international relations.

The ministry accused Washington of escalating sanctions and suppression against China in recent days and introducing multiple discriminatory restrictions.

It said these actions have seriously harmed the rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, departed from a consensus reached by the two heads of state, and undermined the stability of China-US economic and trade relations.

China reserves the right to take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, the ministry said.

The US has maintained a trade embargo on Cuba for decades, and its sanctions can reach foreign companies that do business with entities it targets.
