Afghanistan reach sixth in ICC men's ODI rankings, their highest ever
Afghanistan overtook Sri Lanka to secure their best-ever position in the ODI team standings, with a 4-0 away series win over Ireland among recent results.
Afghanistan climbed to sixth place in the ICC men's ODI team rankings on Monday, moving past Sri Lanka to reach their highest position in the standings, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
The side has already been ranked above Bangladesh, England and West Indies, the ICC said.
Afghanistan have won 96 of their 191 ODI matches, a win-loss ratio of 1.09, according to the ICC's figures.
Their recent results include a 4-0 series win over Ireland away from home and an unbeaten run in the tri-series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
The team also clean swept Zimbabwe in the T20 International format, the ICC said.
Afghanistan are now set to play West Indies, known as the Chevrons, in a two-match Test series.
The ICC said Afghanistan made their ODI debut in 2009 and have improved steadily across formats since then.
Among its earlier milestones, the ICC pointed to wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the 2023 Men's Cricket World Cup.
The ICC also noted that Afghanistan reached their first men's T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024.
The ICC ranks teams in each format using points from recent matches, so a rise in the table reflects results over that period rather than a single match.
